1) From these results you can see that people have their own individual ideas of horror but some of these thoughts were similar to others. The first thoughts that came into peoples minds were "scary" , "dark" and "forests". Out of the 12 people we interviewed , 4 of them said "scary" , 2 of them said "dark" and 2 of them said "forests". These words can all be used to influence the opening we produce so viewers will enjoy it (i.e. jump cuts added, the lighting, and isolation around certain characters)
However, because others had different ideas it lets us see that not everyone has the same expectations of a horror movie so we can use our individual ideas. 3) for this question many people have answered the same.3 people said isolated houses and creepy houses.Which is good as one of our locations is in a house and the circle ritual we want it to look like it is in an isolated place.2 people said forest and others had the individual answers.
5) We thought this question would be good to ask so we can decide which one is more best and effective for our horror opening.for this question most people picked slow pace but fast pace was not that far off.most people picked slow pace for more effect to build up tension and curiosity. We will use slow pace as a result that most people preferred it.
7) Many people have picked creepy kids as they see kids as to be innocent so if in a horror movie they see kids being related to something bad they can feel uncomfortable or sad for the child which most people want all best for them.
|
2) For this question, there are also many similar answers. 6 people mentioned that they like isolated/creepy houses as the setting , which is good, as one of our locations is in a house and we want the ritual circle to seem like it is isolated from everything else. 2 people said forest and others had the individual answers.
4) For this question we got a high result in people picking psychological sub-genre this means if people like psychological mostly they might like our horror opening. On the other hand we had 4 people that separated equally to pick gore or thriller and we had one person that picked comedy,But none have picked slasher or Gothic which suggests its not that interesting.
6) This question was very hard for people to answer as voodoo can be not as known so people wasn't sure what to answer with, this is why we have different answers.most people of value of 2 answered juju,African ritual and pins. Juju and African ritual was not as much related to our pitch although the individual people that answered pain and witch craft related the most out of the others. We think that as people see what the voodoo relates to they will get a better idea.
8) This is another question that we found important to help us with our horror opening to see what would have better impact on our viewers.as you can see the option that people most picked was the music. This is good for us to make sure that the music should be suitable to the atmosphere of the scenes and in time to have an effect on the viewers. Also the music should build up the pace and create tension which links to the second most picked choice from our interviewees.

Name: Georgiana Strut
Character: Sarah Age: 19 Hobby: Makeup/art Have they done any acting before?: Yes |
Candles (tea lights)- These will be placed around the ritual circle and will be the only light (that is seen when filming.) It creates a dark and creepy atmosphere. |
Can- This will belong to the gypsy and it will be filled with the coins when the gypsy is begging in the street. It shows that she is poor and stereotypical begger. |
Pins- These will be used by the gypsy when stabbing the voodoo doll and is a symbol of pain, which could make the audience feel uncomfortable. |
Voodoo doll- We will make the voodoo doll by hand. The voodoo doll will be a small size version of the girl and will be stabbed with pins to cause the girl pain. The audience might feel scared of the gypsy and voodoo dolls as they can do a lot of damage. |
Coins- These are for the gypsy to show that she is poor and it's the only thing that the people have given her on the streets. This might create a feeling of sympathy for the audience, as it shows the little she has. |
Necklace- The necklace represents beauty and is the main prop of the film. The focus will be on the curse put on the necklace by the gypsy. It will attract the girl so much so, that she won't give it back. |
We will need this to do the cut on Sarah's stomach and where she has been stabbed by the gypsy, through the voodoo doll. We will use this pallet to create the bruises and it can be used to do Sarah's makeup at the begging. Also, the greys and the browns in the pallet will be used to do the gypsy's wrinkles/face. |
This has to be used before placing the wax in order for it to stay in place and not fall throughout time. This is very important, because if we don't have this, we will not be able to do special fx makeup. We will use it to show Sarah's wounds. We oreded 4 tubes because we may need to use a lot of it, due to the amount of shots we'll have to take of Sarah in her bedroom and the ritual circle. |

This is a picture of practise makeup Georgiana has done , just to test the products we purchased and to mess around finding the best ways to do it in order to get the best effects.
|
These pictures are an inspiration for Sarah's clothes. They are simple but still quite dressy, and girly , which demonstrates her personality well.
|

|
We picked out this scarf because of the patterns on it, we thought it was a good representation of gypsies, and soon as we saw it we thought of a gypsy.
|
We chose these skirts because we could layer them nicely and is usually the sort of thing gypsies would wear. (This would be worn underneath to show the layers)
|
(This skirt will be worn on top)
|
We will be filming on this bridge near Big Ben (Westminster Station) because it is busy and would be an ideal place for the gypsy to be begging as there are lots of people walking past. It will also create more sympathy for the gypsy at the beginning as no one will be giving her any money or paying her any attention. |
This is Sarah's bedroom. We have chose this room because it has the large mirror and this will be ideal for shot when the gypsy is standing behind her. It also shows some of the girls personality, as she is obsessed with the way she looks.
We will use pinks and reds on the bed , to show that she is quite girly. |
The summary of this movie relates a lot to our opening scene. It shows the consequences of getting on the wrong side of a gypsy and the title sequence for Drag Me To Hell involves the idea of monsters/demons and curses. It doesn't show much blood or gore in this title sequence which is also relates to our opening as it won't be gory. (There will be blood, but not in the dramatised gory way.) We also really like the fact that it includes the fire scene at the end because it gave us some ideas for our title sequence.
|
The title sequence for Blade is kept quite mysterious because of the voice over but also by the way it's edited. The camera pans steadily to the next scene and shows glimpses of weapons and some of the characters. The colour of the text (red) implies there will be quite a lot of blood and possibly could be gory because of the shot of the baby. We like the fact that the main title (BLADE) is related to the main idea of the movie so this inspires us to relate one of our props to the title, which then made us think to create the title using pins.

Scene: nightmare
Sound: heartbeat increasing in speed/ getting louder The sound of the heartbeat will be constantly playing in the scene of the nightmare. It will be there to set the fast pace of that scene and it lets us experience Sarah's emotions of fear at the time. (FLATLINE sound ??) |
|
Scene: nightmare/wakeup Sound: heavy breathing, church/religious music/opera |

Scene: bedroom
Sound: Sarah puts on radio/or music. Quiet background music as she's falling asleep. |

Low-key lighting- this is when the image contains mostly dark tones and colours and is typically used when the director wants to either isolate a subject or convey drama. We will use low key lighting in our opening when the girl is in her bedroom falling asleep and wakes up from the nightmare to show that she is now in danger and something is not right.
High-key lighting- this is when images are mostly bright, with a range of light tones and whites and not very many blacks or mid-tones. High-key lighting is favoured for upbeat and happy scenes. It can represent a character as innocent or having power. We will use the high-key lighting mainly in the beginning of our opening to show that Sarah is not in danger. |
Underexposure- gives a gloomy/dark atmosphere. Specifically in this picture how its quite dark on the edges, this is called vignette to show new york as overcast so it makes it quite depressing. We will use this type of lighting in our opening when the gypsy is walking around until she bumps into the girl. |
Grey- this type of lighting is used to create a gloomy/depressing atmosphere. London is known for its nad weather (rain and fog) so we will represent the typical stereotype of London in our opening. The scene that we will film will be in central London and by using this lighting it will setting the atmosphere in the beginning to create sympathy for the gypsy as well as giving it a dark feel. |
Montage Editing- used to join a sequence of cuts into one fluent edit making the scene frames move fast or slow. In Psycho, this technique is used to make the killing scene more realistic and to hide the fact that the antagonist doesn't actually touch her with the knife. This edit is quite old and so doesn't show the realism of modern films but at the time created a sense of panic and energy throughout the audience. We might use this when Sarah gets ready to go to bed in the room while the gypsy watches her.
|
Freeze Frame- Freeze frame is the effect of seemingly stopping a film in order to focus in one event or element and they used in the to show her facial expression of fear and when woman is lying on the floor dead. We will use this when the Sarah wakes up to show her facial expression how terrified she is. |
Jump Cut- an abrupt, disorientating transitional device in the middle of continuos shot in which the action is noticeably advanced in time or cut between two similar shots, usually done to create discontinuity for artistic event. This technique allowed them to clearly convey the brutality of Marion’s death by allowing the audience to fill in the gaps for themselves. We will use this technique when the Sarah is in the ritual circle to show fast jump cut to create a dramatic effect to the audience and build up the pace. |
Aerial Shot- A camera shot taken from an overhead position.
This shot is really effective as it gives an audience this position of power because of the way the camera is positioned above the character. It also shows everything that the character is surrounded by from a birds eye view. We got inspired by this scene from the American Beauty, that we will use this technique when the Sarah will be in the ritual circle to express the power that she is surrounded by her such as the spirits and devils. |
Panning Shot- A camera pivots horizontally from one direction to the other. Panning has this cool effect to show every angle and what is around a specific object. It also makes it look like its almost 3D.
This shot from the avengers inspired us to use it in one of our scenes where Sarah will put on the necklace to create an affect to the audience so they can see how pretty she is until she gets possessed by the gypsy. |
Point Of View Shot- shows a view from the subjects perspective. We decided that we wanted to use a point of view shot because it puts the audience in the characters position. This allows us to make the audience feel and think as if they were the character. In the moment where Sarah picks up the necklace the audience will see how beautiful it is and make decision if they will keep it or try to give it back. We will also use it when the girl is looking down at her wounds in bed, to make it feel like the audience is in her situation and feel her sense of panic as well. This technique is really good to communicate with the audience through a certain scene. |
Establishing Shot- A shot that establishes a scene, usually to let the audience know where it is set. This fast and furious 7 example is good as it shows the view of the city and the characters. We want to use this technique in the beginning to show where the characters are to show when and where they meet. |
